This theme is presented to visitors by a guide in the saloon of Tram 8 which is a key feature in the Display Gallery.
The local community was passionate about their trams at first. Trams carried them to dances in the Albert Hall, to the pictures and on Mother’s Day to Carr Villa.
Following the decision to replace them with trolley buses in 1946, it was a different story. In the six years it took for the trolley buses to arrive, the old tramway system, run down during the war years, led to accidents and derailments. People resented the trams and looked forward to their new streamlined replacements.
However attitudes have changed, people have mellowed and many have a nostalgic fondness for a form of transport which many urban planners are now promoting.
